Radon Mitigation in Schools in Ft. Collins
Why Radon Mitigation in Schools in Ft. Collins
Ft. Collins, CO residents have probably heard of radon gas before, but many are not aware of the current threat level it has on our school system. In case you did not know, radon kills 20,000 people each year across the United States, and has infested schools across the nation. While homes and commercial buildings are having mitigation systems installed, radon mitigation in schools is still relatively new.
New studies have proven that there are nearly 70,000 schools which have high or elevated levels of radon gas. This equates to about one out of five schools having at least one classroom with elevated levels of radon. In order to prevent our children from having the same fate as the many who have been diagnosed with lung cancer because of radon gas, we need to have radon mitigation in schools.
Radon Mitigation in Schools for Improved Health
Radon forms from the naturally occurring breakdown of uranium in the soil. As uranium breaks down, radon gas forms and may seep through the foundation. As radon is a gas, it may enter through the smallest of spaces and quickly build up. Radon is radioactive and proven to cause cancer, and even the EPA has confirmed it as a threat. Radon gas cannot be seen or smelled, meaning that the only way to know for certain whether or not your school is in need of radon mitigation is testing.
Luckily, a congressman from Iowa is trying to pass a bill in which all schools will be required to test for radon gas. Radon mitigation in schools will also be required if they have high levels of radon gas. The great thing about this bill is that all schools, even in the Ft. Collins area, will receive grant funding for the testing and radon mitigation as needed.
Kids in the Ft. Collins area will need their voice to be heard. As of now roughly one out of every seven cases of lung cancer are caused by radon gas. This means that one out of every seven people diagnosed with lung cancer have never smoked a single cigarette.
